The Role of Physical Therapy and Pilates in Postpartum Recovery

Your body has supported you through pregnancy and childbirth and your recovery deserves just as much care and intention. At The Pilates Rx, we believe postpartum recovery isn’t about bouncing back, but about rebuilding forward with a strong, supported foundation.

Why Postpartum Recovery Matters

Pregnancy and delivery create widespread changes throughout the entire body. Hormonal shifts, cardiovascular and respiratory changes, and adaptations in posture, breathing mechanics, and muscle balance as your body changes and adapts to accommodate growing baby. These changes impact how you move and function in postpartum.

These changes happen over 9 months, and can take just as long or longer to address after. After birth, ongoing hormonal influences (especially with breastfeeding) can contribute to ligamentous laxity. Breastfeeding also increases energy demands, while the physical tasks of childcare ie feeding, carrying, lifting, and prolonged positions can all reinforce altered movement patterns.

Because of this, postpartum recovery requires a comprehensive, individualized approach to restore posture, stability, strength, and movement efficiency.

Jumping back into exercise too quickly or without proper guidance can lead to symptoms like:

  • Low back, SI joint, or hip pain

  • Worsening of diastasis recti or prolapse

  • Pelvic pressure or discomfort

  • Leaking with impact

  • Injury risk

Rebuilding Your Foundation Before Returning to Higher Impact Fitness

This includes restoring:

  • Core and pelvic floor coordination

  • Breath mechanics

  • Functional strength and control

  • Load tolerance and impact readiness

Without this foundation, jumping back into exercise too quickly can increase the risk of symptoms or injury.

We guide you through a graded return to fitness, helping you safely progress toward higher level movement, including running and plyometrics. A safe return to running requires not just time, but adequate strength, pelvic floor function under load, and efficient movement mechanics. We offer return to run assessments and structured progressions to support this transition. For those looking for a deeper analysis, we also collaborate with our sister clinic, The Run Rx, where you can complete a detailed gait assessment to optimize performance and reduce injury risk.
