Client Story:
At 60 years old, our client had spent much of her life as an active, independent woman. But over the past several years, chronic pain in her lower back and hips had slowly crept into her daily life, leaving her feeling restricted and frustrated. Simple tasks—like changing positions in bed, sitting and standing, or bending down to put on her socks—became overly challenging. Walking for extended periods of time left her feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.
Our client however had dreams of traveling, spending more time with friends, and living a more interactive life, all of which required mobility and strength. She wanted to be able to move without the constant burden of discomfort. That's when she decided to take action and seek help from us at The Pilates Rx.
Her journey with the Rx Program began with a thorough assessment. We quickly identified that she was dealing with significant restrictions in her hip joints and poor spinal mobility. The ongoing neck pain also needed attention, and there was a need for deeper core engagement to provide better support for her spine. Together, we set a clear goal: restore her mobility, reduce pain, and strengthen her body so she could travel, stay active, & enjoy life again.
The Healing Process
We developed a comprehensive treatment plan that focused on several key interventions.
Hip Joint Mobilizations:
One of the first goals was to restore movement in her hips, which had become stiff and restricted over time. We performed gentle hip joint mobilizations to loosen up the tight areas and improve her range of motion. Mobilizations helped to ease the pain in her hips, allowing her to move more freely and without as much discomfort and allow us to build better strength on top of her new found mobility.
Core Engagement and Spinal Support:
Next, we worked on deep core strengthening. Our client learned how to engage her transverse abdominis (TA), a deep abdominal muscle that provides support to the spine. This was an essential part of her rehabilitation, as a stronger core would relieve pressure on her lower back and give her better control over her movements.
Spine Mobility in All Planes:
We focused on improving her spinal mobility, with exercises that encouraged movement in all planes—forward and backward bending, side bending, and rotational movements. By improving her spinal flexibility, her overall posture began to improve, and the tension in her back started to release.
Glute Strength and Stability:
Her glutes had weakened over time, which affected her posture and gait mechanics. We focused on strengthening her glutes, which not only helped alleviate back pain but also improved her walking and standing posture. As her glutes grew stronger, she began to notice improvements in her gait—moving with more stability and less discomfort.
Hip Dissociation:
Another critical skill we worked on was hip dissociation, which is the ability to move the hips and torso independently of one another. This improved her posture and helped reduce strain on her lower back. It also made tasks like picking things up from the floor or putting on socks much easier and pain-free.
Postural Education and Neuromuscular Re-education:
Throughout our sessions, we focused on proper posture, reminding her to maintain a neutral spine when sitting, standing, or walking. We also used neuromuscular re-education techniques to help retrain her muscles to move correctly and efficiently. This focus on posture and alignment was key to relieving her pain and preventing future discomfort.
The Results:
As the weeks went by, our client began to see remarkable improvements. The frequency and intensity of her pain decreased significantly. The days of struggling with low back pain became fewer and fewer. With the reduction in pain, she found herself walking longer distances, something she hadn't been able to do in years. Her increased mobility meant she could spend more time out with friends, enjoying the world around her without being held back by pain.
Her glute strength improved, leading to better walking mechanics and a more natural gait. For the first time in ages, she was able to bend down and pick things up from the floor without the fear of triggering a painful spasm in her back. She could even put on her socks without any trouble—something that had once been a daily struggle.
But perhaps the most significant change was in her outlook on life. The confidence she gained through her physical progress reignited her love for adventure. With less pain, greater strength, and improved mobility, she felt ready to take on the world again. Travel, which had once seemed like an impossible dream, was now within reach. She was no longer confined by her body; she was living life with a renewed sense of independence.
Her story is a testament to the power of rehabilitation, the importance of understanding how our bodies move, and the transformative effect of regaining control over our health. With the right interventions, guidance, and a commitment to progress, it’s possible to overcome even the most limiting challenges and emerge stronger, more mobile, and ready to embrace the life ahead.
